Why futures traders keep a trading journal
Futures move fast. A good morning on NQ can turn into a red day in ten minutes, and by the close it's hard to remember why you took the trades you took. A futures trading journal fixes that: every trade gets a screenshot and a reason, and over a few weeks the patterns show up — the setup that works, the time of day you overtrade, the news days you should sit out.
TraderMemo keeps it simple on purpose. Type the contract, long or short, and your net P&L from the platform, paste the chart, and you're done. No complicated imports, no clutter — just the stats a futures trader actually uses.
Everything your futures journal needs
From index futures to crude and gold — and the micros in between.
Chart screenshot on every trade
Press Ctrl+V to paste your chart straight from the clipboard, then write what you saw — the level, the reaction, the reason you got in. Screenshots are stored efficiently, so years of charts fit.
Stats in dollars and R
Net P&L, win rate, profit factor, expectancy, average win and loss, max drawdown and your equity curve. Add the dollars you risked and see results as R multiples too.
Setups that pay — and don't
Tag trades as opening drive, VWAP reclaim, failed breakout or whatever you trade, rate your execution, and see the win rate and P&L of every setup.
P&L calendar and weekdays
Every green and red day at a glance, weekly totals, and your results by weekday — handy for spotting the day you keep giving it back.
News days in view
The Events tab lists this week's high-impact US news (CPI, jobs, Fed) and earnings in your time zone, so you know which sessions are likely to move.
A whiteboard for your levels
Mark up a chart with lines, arrows, boxes and notes before the open on the Board tab — your plan and your trades in the same place.
From trade to insight in three steps
Log the trade
Contract, long or short, the date and your net P&L after commissions. Add the dollars you risked if you want R multiples.
Attach the chart
Paste the screenshot and write down the setup and why you took it. A voice note works too, while it's still fresh.
Review the week
Check the P&L calendar, your best and worst setups and weekdays, and adjust the plan for next week.
Trading futures with a prop firm?
Most futures traders today trade evaluation or funded accounts. TraderMemo has a dedicated Prop side with drawdown, daily loss and profit target meters for every account, logging one trade to many accounts at once, and fees vs payouts. Read more on the prop firm trading journal page, or the Apex trading journal page if you trade Apex.
TraderMemo is a journal, not a trading platform or advice service. It doesn't connect to your broker or place trades. Futures trading involves substantial risk of loss and isn't suitable for everyone.
Futures trading journal questions
What should a futures trading journal track?
At minimum: the contract (like ES, NQ, MES or CL), long or short, the date, your net P&L after commissions, and why you took the trade. A good futures journal adds a chart screenshot, your setup, a rating of how well you followed your plan, and the risk you took — so you can see your results in R as well as dollars.
Does TraderMemo calculate P&L from ticks and contracts?
No. You enter the trade's net P&L straight from your platform, which keeps logging fast and avoids tick-value and commission mistakes. If you add the dollar amount you risked, TraderMemo also shows the result as an R multiple.
Which futures can I journal?
Any. Type whatever symbol you trade — ES, NQ, YM, RTY, the micros like MES and MNQ, CL, GC, ZN or anything else. You can search and filter your trades by symbol later.
Does it import trades from NinjaTrader, Tradovate or Rithmic?
Not at the moment. You log each trade yourself, which takes a few seconds — and many traders find writing the trade down is part of what makes journaling work. Nothing connects to your broker, so your journal stays private on your device.
Does it work for prop firm futures accounts?
Yes. TraderMemo has a separate Prop side for evaluation and funded accounts, with drawdown, daily loss and profit target meters, one-trade-to-many-accounts logging, and fees vs payouts. See the prop firm trading journal page for details.
Can I see how I trade on news days?
The Events tab shows this week's high-impact US economic news (like CPI, jobs and Fed decisions) and earnings, in your time zone. Combine it with the P&L calendar and your notes to spot whether news days help or hurt your trading.
Is my trading data private?
Yes. Trades, screenshots and notes are saved in your own browser, not on our servers, and you can download a full backup anytime.
