What is the CPI report?

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures how much the prices people pay for everyday goods and services have changed. It's the main monthly measure of US inflation, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) at 8:30 AM Eastern Time, an hour before the stock market opens.

Each release covers the previous month. For example, September's CPI comes out in mid-October. Traders watch two numbers most: headline CPI (all items) and core CPI, which leaves out food and energy because they swing a lot from month to month.

Why CPI moves the markets

Inflation drives what the Federal Reserve does with interest rates, so a CPI number that's hotter or cooler than expected can move stock index futures, Treasury yields and the dollar within seconds of 8:30 AM. Markets react mostly to the gap between the actual number and the forecast, which you can see on our economic calendar during CPI week.

Many traders reduce size or stay flat into the release and wait for the first move to settle. Whatever your approach, it helps to know exactly when CPI lands, and to look back at how you've traded on past CPI days. See also the FOMC meeting dates, the other big scheduled market mover.

FAQ

Questions

When is the next CPI report?

The next CPI release is highlighted at the top of this page, with a countdown. CPI is released monthly at 8:30 AM Eastern Time, usually around the 10th to 15th of the month.

What time is CPI released?

CPI is released at 8:30 AM Eastern Time (ET), which is 7:30 AM Central, 5:30 AM Pacific and 1:30 PM in London (12:30 PM when US daylight saving time and UK time are out of step).

What is the difference between CPI and core CPI?

Headline CPI includes everything in the basket. Core CPI excludes food and energy prices, which are volatile, so it gives a steadier read on underlying inflation. Markets often react most to core CPI.

Who publishes the CPI?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), part of the Department of Labor. Its release schedule is the official source for these dates.

Can CPI release dates change?

Rarely, but yes. For example, a government shutdown can delay releases. Always confirm with the BLS schedule close to the date.

Dates from official US government sources, checked October 13, 2026. Schedules can change, so confirm with the source before trading. For information only, not financial advice. TraderMemo isn't affiliated with the BLS or the Federal Reserve.
