What is the FOMC?
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is the part of the Federal Reserve that sets US interest rates. It holds eight scheduled meetings a year, each over two days. The interest-rate decision comes at the end of the second day.
What happens on Fed decision day
The FOMC releases its policy statement and rate decision at 2:00 PM Eastern Time on the second day, and the Fed Chair holds a press conference at 2:30 PM ET. Four of the eight meetings (March, June, September and December) also come with the Summary of Economic Projections, including the "dot plot" showing where officials expect rates to go. Those meetings often move markets the most.
Detailed minutes of each meeting are published three weeks after the decision. Between meetings, Fed officials' speeches can also move markets; you'll find them on our economic calendar.
Why Fed days matter to traders
Rate decisions and the Chair's comments can swing stock index futures, Treasury yields, the dollar and gold sharply in the minutes after 2:00 PM, and again during the press conference. Many traders plan around these afternoons, along with the monthly CPI release dates.
